The East African Startups Nobody's Talking About (But Should Be)

Most coverage of East African tech gravitates toward the same handful of names, the companies that have raised the biggest rounds, hit the highest valuations, or expanded into the most countries. That coverage is useful, but it also means a lot of genuinely inventive, small-scale companies solving real problems never make it into the conversation at all.

These four aren't unicorns, and most people outside their specific sector have never heard of them. That's exactly why they're worth a closer look.

ARC Ride: Solving Boda Boda Range Anxiety One Battery Swap at a Time

Kenya's boda boda motorcycle taxis are everywhere, and most of them still run on petrol, an expense that eats directly into the daily earnings of gig-economy riders navigating volatile fuel prices. ARC Ride, founded in Nairobi in 2019 by British entrepreneur Joseph Hurst-Croft, built a Battery-as-a-Service model specifically for this problem: riders swap a depleted battery for a fully charged one at a network of automated cabinets in minutes, removing both the high upfront cost of an electric motorcycle and the range anxiety that usually kills EV adoption among riders who can't afford downtime.

The company operates what it describes as Africa's first and largest automated battery-swapping network, and in September 2025 it secured $10 million in debt financing from Mirova, a Paris-based sustainable investment manager, marking the first time Mirova's $282 million Gigaton Fund had invested in an African e-mobility company. The funding will roll out more than 600 battery-swapping cabinets and 25,000 batteries across Kenya, each electric motorcycle in the network estimated to cut roughly two tonnes of CO2 emissions a year compared to its petrol equivalent.

SPOUTS: The Ceramic Water Filter Factory That Started Next to 200 Chickens

In 2010, Kathy Ku visited Uganda and was struck by how many communities still lacked access to clean water. The following year, she co-founded SPOUTS of Water in Kampala, starting production in a factory space shared with 200 chickens, taking weeks to hand-produce a single filter. Today, SPOUTS is Africa's largest manufacturer of ceramic water filters, producing roughly 10,000 units a month under its Purifaaya brand, made from locally sourced clay and fired in a kiln, requiring no electricity, chemicals, or boiling to make water safe to drink.

The business model is what makes SPOUTS more than a charity project: alongside direct filter sales, the company generates verified carbon credits by displacing the firewood and charcoal households would otherwise burn to boil water, a revenue stream that helps subsidise filters for communities with limited purchasing power. SPOUTS now operates in both Uganda and Rwanda, and has installed filters in more than 147 schools alone.

Mazao Hub: AI Built for Tanzanian Crops, Not Generic Ones

Most agricultural AI tools are trained on data from wherever the company happened to have access, often crops and conditions that look nothing like a smallholder farm in Tanzania. Mazao Hub, founded by Adolf Kiiza, built its pest and disease detection models specifically on Tanzanian crops instead, on the reasoning that a farmer photographing a diseased maize leaf near Dodoma needs a model that actually recognises what's in front of it, not one trained primarily on crop varieties from another continent.

The company raised a $2 million seed round from Catalyst Fund in September 2025, a meaningful vote of confidence in a country where AI-focused startups raised roughly $5 million in total across all of 2025, far behind Kenya and Uganda's totals. That gap isn't necessarily a weakness: with roughly 65% of Tanzanians engaged in agriculture and mobile money penetration above 80%, Mazao Hub is one of a mall cluster of Tanzanian AI startups betting that narrow, deeply local products beat broad, generic ones for exactly this kind of problem, a philosophy that echoes the "reason, plan, and complete tasks with minimal input" framing we explored in What Are AI Agents? Water Access Rwanda: A Water Utility Built Nine Days at a Time

Christelle Kwizera started what became Water Access Rwanda after raising roughly $15,000 while still a university student in Oklahoma, funding for boreholes near communities that were fetching drinking water from crocodile-infested lakes. That scrappy beginning has since grown into a genuine rural water utility built around a technology called INUMA, a decentralised, solar-powered water mini-grid that can be deployed in about nine days for roughly $11,000 and serve up to 1,500 people at WHO-standard water quality.

What separates Water Access Rwanda from a typical donor-funded borehole project is the business model underneath it: customers buy water tokens before consumption in a pay-as-you-go system, priced at roughly $1 per 1,000 litres, generating actual revenue that funds maintenance rather than relying on continuous donor top-ups. The company has installed more than 50 piped water systems serving over 100,000 people, operates 1,312 active water points reaching nearly 177,000 users, and has even documented measurable knock-on effects, communities with INUMA access report meaningfully better school examination performance than those without it, likely tied to less time spent fetching water and fewer waterborne illnesses.

What Ties These Four Together

None of these companies are chasing the kind of hypergrowth, winner-take-all outcome that usually generates headlines. They're solving specific, physical, unglamorous problems, a battery that needs charging, water that needs filtering, a crop that needs diagnosing, a village that needs a water grid, and building real, revenue-generating businesses around each one rather than waiting for a subsidy to renew.

That pattern is worth paying attention to for a reason beyond good storytelling.
